URL slugs — frequently asked
What makes a good URL slug?
Short, lowercase, hyphen-separated, and keyword-rich. Avoid spaces, capitals, and special characters — they get percent-encoded and look messy when shared. A clean slug is easier to read, remember, and rank.
Should I use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google treats hyphens as word separators but reads underscores as joiners, so “pie_chart” can be read as one word while “pie-chart” is read as two. Hyphens are the SEO-safe default.
Why remove stop words?
Words like “the”, “a”, and “to” add length without adding meaning for search engines. Dropping them keeps the slug focused on the terms that matter — though it is optional, and readability sometimes wins.
